To begin, you must know what a noun and a verb are (which I'm sure you do). 

 

Affect is a verb.  How did something affect you? How did it affect someone else or something else?  "To affect" is the infinitive and the past participle is affected, the present participle is affect or affecting, and the future participle is will affect.

 

Effect is a noun.  The result of something happening is the effect.  Effect can also be used as an adjective to modify or tell me more about the noun or pronoun: effective.
