Lysosomes contain hydrolytic enzymes that digest cell waste products or substrates that have been ingested through endocytosis.

Peroxisomes break down fatty acids through a process known as beta-oxidation, and subsequently breakdown hydrogen peroxide (a cytotoxic by-product) using an enzyme known as catalase to produce water and oxygen.
