Buenos dias: I'd suggest you read this slowly and let each part sink in before you continue. There's a lot of information here so if you need more assistance, don't hesitate to ask. Pay attention to instructions of your assignment: PLURAL commands (ustedes) in first section; Tu command in second. The commands for usted, ustedes, whether negative or affirmative, AND the negative tu command all use "opposite endings". That means if it's an "ar" verb, you will be using the vowel "e" in the command ending and if it's an "ir" or "er" verb you will be using the vowel "a". You have to start with the "yo" present tense for regular verbs and take off the "O" at the end. (There are always irregulars that follow different rules.) Examples of regulars: Hablar - start with "yo hablo" - HablE usted, or No hablE usted, / HablEN ustedes OR No hablEN ustedes; / No hablES tu ahora! (Sorry, I can't get my Spanish markings up!) The "tu" should have an accent for "you" familiar. The affirmative "tu" command is the same as the PRESENT tense for el, ella, usted: So affirmatively it would be: !Habla tu! Speak! Other Ex: !Lee tu ese libro! (Read that book!), !Cierra la puerta! (Close the door!) Negatively: !No leas tu ese libro! (DON't read that book!) !No cierres la puerta! (DON't close the door!) Then there are SOUND changes, when spelling is altered to maintain the sound of the original infinitive sound: Buscar - to look for: !BusQUEn ustedes los cuadernos! Look for the notebooks! If you left the "c" , as it's spelled in the infinitive, the "c" takes on an "s" sound because the letter "e" is now following it rather than the letter "a" and that would change the sound from the original verb sound. Pagar - to pay (for) !No paGUE usted ahora! Don't pay now! If you did not put in the letter "u" next to the "g", the "g" would sound like an English "h" because "g" followed by an "e" softens the sound of the "g". Since the original verb has a "hard g" sound, the letter "u" is needed to maintain that harder "g" sound. Many more sound changes exist. "car", "gar" and "zar" ending infinitives are only a few But notice, always use opposite endings for Usted, Ustedes (both negative and affirmative); BUT ONLY the negative tu, uses opposite endings. Affirmative tu = EXACTLY as el, ella, usted PRESENT TENSE Estudiar: Estudie ud., Estudien uds., : No Estudie ud., No estudien uds., ; NO estudies tu, BUT estudia tu (Accent marks should be on the "tu" to mean "you" - Sorry can't bring them up on my computer) Then there are completely irregular commands where you DO NOT START with the "YO" in usted/ustedes and/or tu Those you need to learn by memory. Looks like the verb "SER" is the only one that applies to that in your assignment here. (Meaning you DO NOT start to form the command from the "Yo" form "soy" ) First question of homework: #1. Go to "Yo" form of Hacer: Hago Use Opposite endings: HagAN (would be same even if negative) #2. Sacar - go to Yo form: saCo - when you put the opposite ending "en", since that would soften the "c" to sound like an "s", you have to SOUND CHANGE it, like "buscar"; it goes to saQUEN . #3.Olvidarse - here you have a "reflexive" verb; the "se" at end of infinitive shows you that. You have to use a correct reflexive. If it's a negative command, you put that word IN FRONT; if it's an affirmative command you ATTACH it to the verb. Since these are NEGATIVE commands it would look like this: No SE olviden de........................... "se" is the reflexive used for both "usted" and "ustedes" "te" is the reflexive used for "tu" Your first question, second section in your homework: Almorzar Go to Yo form: almuerzo (it is a stem-changing verb 0 - ue) Now use "opposite ending. Pay attention because it is AlSO a sound change, however, the "sound" is definitely not obvious as it is with "car" and "gar". Some language people believe that a very long time ago, the letter "z" had two different sounds, just like the letters "c" and "g" do nowadays. (With "zar" verbs, the "z" changes to "c" before the letter "e".) Hope this helps. Buena suerte. Senorita Larena
