I would begin by clarifying what it is, exactly, you are hoping to cover in your paper and with your thesis statement. Once you have shaped the scope of your essay, eliminate those words that do not pertain to your thesis. After you have winnowed down your options, begin to group the remaining words into thematic clusters. If you find that you can eliminate more words, do so. Hone in on a few words that do the most work towards promoting your thesis and draft your thesis statement. From there, develop the logical progression of your paragraph, integrating the thematic word clusters where they are relevant.
