To further this answer yes it is due to incompetent valves in the venous system, typically in the lower extremity. These incompetent valves lead to reflux of venous blood, pooling, and ultimately dilation of the thin wall distensible veins. In the venous system unlike the arterial system which have muscular walls we have two ways of helping blood get back to the heart; first we have valves in most veins which prevent blood from refluxing, second is we use muscles to propel venous blood back ie the calf muscles will contract squeezing the blood back towards the heart. When one or both of these mechanisms fail you can get lower varicose veins, LE edema, and "venous stasis" changes such as venous stasis dermatitis. For prevention it is recommended to elevate extremities, use of medical compression socks/stockings which need to be fitted by a professional, as well a rectifying any risk factors. Hope this helps.

Varicose veins are a result of inefficient vein valves that cause blood pools under the skin.

Varicose veins occur when the valves in the veins become weakened by prolonged standing or sitting. Blood pools in the veins and actually becomes stagnant, causing the vein to sag downward. Gravity pulls it downward. Because it takes muscular contraction to keep the blood from pooling in the veins, inactivity is the primary cause. Over time, the blood pooling pushes downward on the valves and they become weak. To prevent varicose veins it is important to remain physically active as much as possible, maintain a healthy weight, obesity is a factor in blood and lymphatic pooling, or wear support or compression socks or stockings. The external compression on the legs helps to keep the blood from pooling in the extremities. This is turn prevents the valves from becoming weakened or incompetent, Fortunately. support hosiery is available in good clothing or medical supply stores, they are chosen by the person's lower leg circumference. They are a great relief when standing all day, ask any nurse or teacher. Keep studying! You ask great questions!04/03/20
