DNA polymerase can only read from the 5' to 3' direction. For the leading strand of the replication for this is easy and the polymerase can read in one continuous line. The lagging strand however, is in the opposite direction so the polymerase makes small fragments in the correct direction (5' to 3') called okazaki fragments and these are later stitched together
