Why do male makes millions of sperm, while females only release one single egg?

Women are born with all the eggs they will ever have. The eggs develop while the woman's mother is pregnant with her. Men are constantly producing sperm through their sex organs once they have reached puberty. The egg and the sperm carry the same amount of DNA. Because of the relatively quicker production of sperm versus eggs, there can be sperm that are released which are not compatible with forming life. This is not to say there cannot be issues with the female's eggs. However, sperm can be formed without a head and/or other abnormalities. The woman's egg needs to be perfect to accept a sperm. However, only one of the millions of sperm needs to be compatible with life and make it to the egg for fertilization.

There are several reasons why sperm are produced in larger quantities than eggs, the main reason is that, metabolically speaking, the egg takes more energy to produce. For each ovulation cycle a single egg is matured from a seletion process that takes nearly 14 days to produce. The egg contains not only the genetic material for the new life, but also the material needed to support life. On the other hand, the male sperm only carry genetic material and enough energy to make it to the egg.
