It depends a great deal on what you’re writing and what you already know about the project. Have you already researched a technical paper? Have you read a story or novel you need to review? Are you writing to persuade others on some issue of public policy?

The one thing that comes before every writing project is organizing the information you plan to use.

Hi Amy. I will offer my tips on a pre-writing strategy. But, even though these are my ideas, others can offer tips which are equally as valuable... But, here are mine:

1. First, build an outline that covers sections that represent the summary, introduction, body, and conclusion blocks of the paper.
2. Keep in mind that essays that are intended to be prose will be structured differently than technical papers. But, an outline is still valuable.
3. Know your audience. Understand whether you are writing to persuade an audience of a particular concept. Tailor your writing to meet that objective. But, if it is an essay which is not intended to be editorialized, you'll want to take a softer tone. You should conceptualize a strategy around this in advance.
4. Collect your thoughts and record what key points you wish to include in each section. These can be very abbreviated, intended to be placeholders to be expanded later on when the formal report is being written.
5. A technical paper that will draw specific conclusions should rely on impeccable sources, usually of the scholarly published variety. Make sure you have done your research to be able to defend the points you are purporting in your essay.
