This is a great answer! The problem is, in my experience students have a hard getting started and implementing the advice here , or they spend so much time outlining they don't leave enough time for writing (and revising! Always, always, revise.) Here's what works for me: set a timer for five minutes and brain dump onto the page the ideas you have on possible topics and theses, what you want to include, questions you might have for the teacher, or things you need to look up. Ta dah! No more blank page. Another quick way to get started and keep yourself on track is a simple 1-2-3 list. Write down a draft thesis, then write three examples/evidence that support it. If you can't come up with three, you'll need to choose another topic. This quick test works great for in-class essays and essay exams. If you're stuck, start from middle. For example, if you're not sure on what your thesis will be, but you know you'll have to write a paragraph about the causes of WWII, do that first. Writing sets your brain's wheels in motion and will help you figure out the rest. Finally, be flexible. In the process of writing you might decide to fine-tune your thesis or add or subject something from your outline. This is what true revision is, and it can make a big difference. Just make sure that if you change one idea you change it throughout your essay where indicated.
