Chaucer wrote about the 14th century's corruption among the classes and religious piety. In so doing, he critiqued the caste system and government. There is little evidence of repercussion, however, The Cantebury Tales are unfinished with some of the original pilgrims' stories being left out. There are also no return journeys enumerated as he'd originally planned. Further, the book ends with "Chaucer's retraction" implying he came under fire and needed to deny some of the critiques to gain publishing. This is largely speculation, though additional research into the specifics could yield more interesting information.
