Protecting others lies far beyond your own personal desire to be there for the ones that you love. There should be a conversation about if the other person feels like they need the protection that you have to offer. There are some situations (like abuse, neglect, violence) where there is an interpersonal conflict that may arise when you do not protect the victim. In these situation the value of protecting those who do not have the ability or courage to protect themselves is great.
If the motive behind protecting another person lies in jealousy or fear of injury without proper proof of danger it may be more of a selfish act in regard to your own personal ego.
