As a big idea: think about going to the mall to purchase a sweater priced $30. You pay $15 for the sweater.
I.e you are getting half off the price of the sweater.
what percentage of 30 is 15. i.e x% x 30 = 15.
x/100 x 30 = 15.
30x/100 = 15 (multiply numerators 30 X x)
30x = 100 x 15
30x = 1500
30x/30= 1500/30 (divide 30 on both sides)
x = 50
You are getting the sweater for 50% off
x/100 X 50 = 80 ; 50x/100 = 80 ; 50x = 100 X 80 ; 50x/50 = 8000/50 ; x = 160

This might help...
percentage=rate*base where percentage is the "is" number, base is the "of" number and rate is the "%"
what percent of 50 is 80 ?
you are looking for the rate, the percent (%)
80 is the "is" number and 50 is the "of" number
set it up using the formula...
80=rate*50
80/50=rate
seeing that you want a percent, which means "hundredths"...
80/50=(80*2)/(50*2)=160/100=160%
80 is 160% of 50
check: 160%*50=1.6*50=80

"What percent" can look like this: ?/100
And since 50 is the total, of which 80 is a part, it looks like 80/50.
So you can use a ratio: 80 is to 50 as ? is to 100. So your ? would be 160
You can also cross multiply and get 50? = 8000. Divide by 50 and get ? = 160.
So 80 = 160% of 50. Awkward but true!

Each number is 100% of itself. When it is asked, what % of a smaller number is a bigger number, obviously % is greater than 100% and vice versa.
Solution:
x % of 50 = 80
or, x = 80 * 100/ 50 = 160
