is a it a long bunched up strand or is it shaped like a chromosome (x shaped)?

This depends on what stage it is in. During interphase DNA is in a euchromatin form (where it is strand like and open for transcription). During Mitosis DNA condenses and coils into its heterochromatin form which gives you the chromosome x shape.
