I would say it revives it, but, unlike Shelley's original monster, who is feared and ostracized, Edward finds acceptance, as the character Diane Wiest plays takes him into her home and under her wings, discovering that with scissors for hands Edward is a natural cosmologist. It is only when the neighborhood bully who wants the daughter of Edward's matron (who narrates the story), the girl Edward loves, provoked Edward to protectively attack, that people realize that Edward is a threat, a danger, and a monster.
