Berryman, one of the first craftsmen of "confessional" poetry, wrote topically and engagingly with taboo subject matter, such as: suicide, alcoholism, divorce, and with profanity that would be seen as blasphemous in the Puritan Tradition. Thus, his poetry, while not at all metaphysical as such Puritan poets like Edward Taylor, would be seen as un-divine, morose, and lacking any sort of educational or theological impotence.
