Why did Montresor want to kill Fortunato?

In _The Cask of Amontillado_, Montresor traps Fortunato in the catacombs, but his motives are not explicitly explained. Montresor does allude to some wrongs committed against him by Fortunato. Is it possible to glean something from literary analysis?

Yes. Fortunato could be alluding to the fact that he or someone was trapped. Furthermore, being associated with death, Montresor may have essentially “buried” Fortunato in a place where death was nearly inevitable.
