Hi Nadeen, these are words that shouldn't be abbreviated. They are never used as abbreviations. In some of the examples, the shortened word makes no sense. I imagine you saw them in a text? Also, I'm going to guess some of the full words because I don't see them in context (in a sentence or paragraph).
compar,= this could be either comparison, comparing, compare, or comparative - Examples: Mary always compares herself to her sister. Her sister doesn't like how Mary makes comparisons between them. Comparing yourself to others can make you unhappy. We study Comparative Religion in class to see the similarities and differences between Christian, Muslim, Jewish and other faiths..
derog, = derogatory - when you say something that is derogatory, it is negative, maybe even an insulting statement. Two examples: 1. When she gets angry, she says a lot of derogatory things about the person she's mad at. 2. My neighbor told me I'm rude; what a derogatory thing to say!
emphat,= emphatic - very certain, very sure Example: The doctor was very emphatic when he told me I had to lose weight.
euphem,= euphemism - is a word or words to describe something so you sound more polite. For example, a euphemism for "going to the toilet" is "going to the restroom."
iron, = I don'd know, unless the writer meant ironing, "I have to do some ironing."
joc - Also, I don't know unless the writer meant either jocular (funny) - He's a jocular guy; he tells a lot of jokes OR He's referring to a guy who likes sports, a "jock."
If you want to send more samples of where you found these shortened words, I'll be happy to explain further.
Thanks for asking....Lorraine
