Was Catcher in the Rye autobiographical?

Was *Catcher in the Rye* by J.D. Salinger in any way based on Salinger's earlier life, like the works of Charles Dickens?

It's really common for authors to incorporate portions of themselves in fictionalized stories (RE: The Bell Jar), but Salinger did write the introduction of the book to convey to his readers that Holden ended up in a mental institution. That's the lens he wanted you to read Holden's character through; not one of authorial confession, but one of psychiatric therapy.

While J.D. Salinger did incorporate some of his real life into Catcher in the Rye, it was not an autobiography and was indeed a work of fiction. It is not uncommon for writers to have some of their personal lives shown in work as it is easier to write about what you have experienced rather than something you have no personal reference to.
