Why are H+ ions pumped into the thylakoid space as the electrons pass through the cytochrome complex from PS2 to PS1 during photosynthesis?

Just as in animals, this electron transport chains purpose is to generate an energy potential gradient between the thylakoid space and the chloroplast stroma. This proton differential then allows for PMF to power ATP synthase to yield cellular energy.
