The first thing to remember before proofreading, is to make sure you're in the right headspace for it! Meaning, ensuring you aren't stressed, tired, or overwhelmed. This first step will ensure that you won't have that "i just want to get it done" feeling.

Once you feel ready, (if you have access to a printer), print it out! It's simple, but having that To Kill a Mocking Bird paper in a different format might help you to catch any mistakes.

Next, read the paper out loud. You can read it to a friend, to yourself, or to a pet! If you read your work out loud, you may think to yourself, I meant to say Boo Radley instead of Boo Bradley.

One thing you want to do in proofreading is to make things consistent. Inconsistencies can trip up a reader. If you write "forty-five" in one place and in another place write "45," the reader will know one of them isn't right, even if they don't know which one is right. If you have "Page Two" at the bottom of one page and "Page 3" at the bottom of another, same thing.

To be sure you're doing it right, consult the style guide that's appropriate for the context in which you're writing. APA and MLA style are commonly used in academic writing, depending on the subject. They cover how to format citations, but they also cover how to format dates, abbreviations, numbers, etc.

If you find inconsistencies in things that are not covered in the style guide, choose a way to do it and be consistent about it. The check for consistency when you proofread.

I would proof read my work not directly after I've written it, but after I've taken a break and come back to it. So that this way I can read it refreshed and with a clearer mind that is not still ingested with information on what I have just written. Something even as simple as putting in a new load of laundry and coming back to it. So long as your eyes and brain have had a chance to step back for a bit. Also, handing it over to someone else for a more objective opinion. When you're proofreading, you're not just looking for things such as spelling mistakes, you also need to look out for whether or not the text flows well for the reader, and it never hurts to get a second opinion on your work.
