Why do Humans not produce Vitamin C like other mammals?

Why do most mammals produce their own Vitamin C? Why do Humans not?

Some mammals have lost the ability to synthesize vitamin c due to mutations in the gene that codes for the enzyme that catalyzes the last step of vitamin C biosynthetic pathway. This ability has been lost in humans, guinea pigs, and to some degree, bats.
