Is there a trick to remembering 'llevar' and 'traer'?

After years of living in a Spanish-speaking country, and speaking mostly only Spanish all day, I still struggle with 'llevar' and 'traer'. The rules are clear and all, but it is just very difficult to apply this properly. Is there anybody who has a special trick that helped him/her to do this the right way?

I’ve never really thought much on this, but maybe since llevar is meant to describe bringing or taking something to a different place than you currently are, you can think of the object as ‘leaving’ you.

Leave -> Llevar

Traer would just be the opposite. Not sure if there is a good T word in a English to relate to something coming your way. Maybe ‘team up’ or ‘together’?
