break the word down. "Erythro" means red while "cyte" means cells. Together, erythrocyte means red blood cells (RBC). The function of RBC is to carry oxygen-rich blood to cells of the body. While they initially contain a nucleus, RBCs eventually eject it out to make room for all that hemoglobin, which is a type of protein that allows oxygen molecules to ride on it. Fun fact: RBCs are the only cells in the human body that do not have a nucleus. Since they do not have a nucleus they have an average lifespan of 120 days.
