J, P, and S work in a grocery store. J makes $7 per hour. P makes 20% more than J, and S makes 5% less than P. How much does S make per hour?

Think of the $7.00 as the full 100%, or 1 of what J makes.  If P makes 20% more, then she makes 120%, or 1.20 of J.  1.2 of 7 is nothing more than 1.2 times 7, so 8.4, or in money, $8.40.

 

Same thing for S, but in the other direction.  5% less would be 95%, or .95  .95($8.40)=$7.98.

 

S makes $7.98/hour
