Two major approaches to African American studies in the academy are the cultural approach, which focuses on the history, literature, and art of African Americans, and the social scientific approach, which focuses on quantitative data to understand population trends and social problems. Marable offers an alternative approach which he terms “Critical Race Theory.” This approach examines the intersection of race, gender, class, and sexuality, and seeks to understand how these social forces have shaped African American experiences. It is a critical approach that challenges the status quo and seeks to create a more equitable society. It emphasizes the need to look at the structural and systemic forces that have shaped the experiences of African Americans and other people of color in the United States.
