Why is the nickname “dark reactions” not entirely correct for the chemical stage of photosynthesis?

The reactions of photosynthesis that are NOT light dependent are called the dark reactions- this just means that photons from light aren't required as an energy source. However, this doesn't mean that these reactions occur in the dark- they occur often at the same time as the light reactions. They're called the dark reactions simply because of the light independent nature (they CAN occur in the dark, but its not necessary).
