Both similes and metaphors compare 2 unlike things. The difference is that similes use like or as, metaphors do not us like or as.

Simile example: She is sharp as a tack. (meaning - she is very smart)

The brothers fought like cats and dogs.

Metaphor example: Life is a roller coaster. (meaning - In the span of one's life there will be many ups, downs, twists, and turns.)

A Simile compares two unlike things that are frequently introduced by "like" or "as".

Example: - The comedian embarrassed the female patron so terribly, that her cheeks became as red like a rose.

A metaphor is used to make a comparison between two things that are not alike, but have something in common. It is used to describe the two things (something) indirectly stating that something is something else.

Example: - The boy injured his arm so dreadfully on the football field that when it was time to come to the dinner table, he walked slower than a turtle.
