The two stages of photosynthesis are the light-independent and light-dependent stages.

In the light-dependent (LD) stage light is required (it depends on light, its right in the name!). Light is used to break water into the byproduct O₂ and energetic molcules that are needed for the light-independent stage (the molecules are ATP and NADPH. The LD stage occurs in the thylakoids.

In the Light-independent (LI) stage the cell uses CO₂ and products from the previous stage to create molecules of glucose, C₆H₁₂O₆. The LI stage occurs in the Stroma of the cell.
