An art professor once said to me, "If it doesn't bother you leave it, don't change it." For myself, it has always been that you put out your work, people will either like it or not, and they may respond from the heart, just to be kind, or tell you they don't understand it. I think peoples' opinion of your work may or may not be just that; your work remains to represent an object by itself.
You have no obligation to defend it, and comparisons are just that. The work you make is yours to control, meaning your thoughts and feelings mean something - you. Try to think with confidence, but it takes time and effort, and practice, practice, practice.
