Term to describe generalizations such as "it is well known"?

I wouldn't call this a generalization but a cliched phrase. I always counsel against using them in writing. So I wouldn't really care what other cliche you used; to me, they all sound trite. It is much better to find your own vocabulary rather than falling back on cliches.
