Question

Mr. Stewart is designing a rectangular flower garden with a fence around it. He can use no more than 80ft of fencing. He wants the width to be at least 5ft and the length to be at least 20ft.
Let x = width of the garden (ft)
Let y = length of the garden (ft)

Solve the inequalities and graph.

x ≥ 5

y ≥ 20

2x + 2y ≤ 80 (perimeter is 2 lengths plus 2 widths

 

Graph these three equations. The points of intersection are

 

(20, 20) and (5, 35).

 

All 80 feet of fence is used when the length and width equal 20 and when the width equals 5 and the length equals 35.
