I think if you learn the comma rules, it will help you determine when there is an appropriate pause that requires punctuation. Commas can be used after Introductory words or phrases at the beginning of a sentence, like "In the beginning of the story, (pause)" We don't usually separate subjects and verbs unless we have an appositive that follows a noun - then we would use commas before and after the appositive. Example: "My English teacher, who has been teaching for years, is excellent." So, if you have a phrase (not a complete sentence) at the beginning of a sentence, that usually creates a pause and a need for a comma.
