Is it possible to combine charcoal and graphite in one image?

Im drawing an image with quite a large range of tones and I plan to draw the darker tones in charcoal. However I used a graphite pencil for the preparatory drawing. Is it still possible to draw with charcoal even on an area where graphite has been applied or do I have to prepare the area before adding the charcoal?

Yes! Completely possible! Also what a lot of people do! You can just go to town on your drawing with any grade of charcoal you have, if you are concerned about the graphite repelling the charcoal (it shouldn't) you can hit the drawing with a light dusting of fixative that will give the paper back some of its tooth.
