The rocks, as you move from the center of the ride, get older. At the ridge, new oceanic crust is formed from the cooling of lava. These new rocks are constantly being generated and as they are generated they push the previously formed rock away from the ridge! Therefore, rocks are oldest at the continental margins and youngest at the ridge.
