Is an indentation needed for a new paragraph?

Is an indentation (Tab button in Word) needed for a new paragraph when you start one? I was told to do that a long time ago but 3 years after I stopped doing it and have done it since. Are you meant to indent when you start a new paragraph?

Indentation is necessary unless you put a space between your paragraphs. Both show that a new thought or topic is being expressed and are used in the same way. You can use one or the other, but both serve the same purpose.
