This is a bit of a trick question. The pharynx is actually part of both the digestive and respiratory systems. Food and liquid, as well as air, passes through the pharynx. The epiglottis closes over the glottis to direct food and water to the esophagus and keep it out of the lungs.

The pharynx is part of both respiratory and digestive systems because it connects the nasal and oral cavities and assists with both breathing and chewing/swallowing.
