When bacteria acquire resistance to standard medicines eg. antibiotics, we call it antibiotic resistant bacteria. However, you still can have a chance to kill those resistant bacteria if you have an antibiotic that is still effective against that bacteria. for example. mupirocin; a topical antibiotic is used to control skin infections caused by MRSA (methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus).
Microbiologists in their lab uses several media infused with various types of antibiotic to grow a bacteria. If the bacteria is resistant against an antibiotic, it will occupy the space treated with that antibiotic, but if that bacteria is weak against that antibiotic, this bacteria will not be able to spread on that space treated with that effective antibiotic. That is how a bacteria's antibiotic resistance can be easily identified.
