Authors use syntax to draw attention to specific words or ideas and to establish tone through pacing. For example, short and/or choppy sentences signal decisevess and speed. Long sentences, particularly when beginning with a subordinate clause, slow down the pace of the text and therefore signal contemplation or detailed examination of a subject.
