If you look at the definition of dioecious, it means

(especially of plants) having the male and female organs in separate and distinct individuals; having separate sexes. (dictionary.com).

Date palms, according to Hunker.com, have male flowers on one plant, and female flowers on another plant. The sexes are distinct on each tree, as opposed to flowers of the same sex residing on one individual plant.
