A human diploid cell contains 46 chromosomes (23 pairs of chromosomes). A haploid cell (as it names suggests), has half of these - aka a single pair of each chromosomes. Haploid cells are generated during meiosis to ensure that when a sperm and egg meet the resulting cell (or zygote as it is known) contains exactly half the information from one parent and half from the other. Humans typically have two sex chromosomes - either an XX (female) or XY (male).
