The are ferns. Ferns produce spore cases (little brown balls) on the under side of the frond or leaf. The spores are released under proper conditions of temperature, maturity and moisture. The spores appear to 'fly.' "pterid" means 'flying' like in the word 'pterodactyl.' Remember the pictures of flying dinosaurs? They are the pterodactyls.
