The most famous and largest is Mauna Loa, in Hawaii. Many Hawaiian volcanoes are shield volcanoes. Shield volcanoes are recognizable because they are very wide instead of tall, their explosions are not ...explosive... but rather lava flows out gently and gradually from their vent in all directions and when it cools it causes the distinctive shield shape.
