"The sum of two numbers is 45. The larger number is 9 more than the smaller number. What are the numbers?"

The sum of two numbers is 45

x + y = 45

The larger number is 9 more than the smaller number

y = x + 9

Substitute:

x + x + 9 = 45

2x = 36

x = 18

y = 27
