what’s the process an immigrant went through when traveling from Europe, China or Japan?

European immigrants would typically port in NYC at Ellis Island, while Asian immigrants would come through Angel Island in San Francisco. If you ever get confused with which immigrant went to which location, think of it geographically. European immigrants could arrive on a direct, quick route to Ellis, while the same is said for Asian immigrants with Angel.
Looking a bit further into conditions: the PREMIUM port was Ellis Island, and it isn't even close. Asian immigrants stepping off at Angel Island were often met with hostility and could see themselves "imprisoned" on Angel Island for weeks!
