You currently have 24 credit hours and a 2.8 GPA. You need a 3.0 GPA to get into USF. If you are taking 16 credit hours this semester, what GPA must you get in order to raise your GPA to the correct level? Set up an equation and use algebra to solve.

------------------    = 3.0

24(2.8) + 16(x) = 120

           16x = 52.8

               x = 3.3

Not at all complicated! You just have to weight each grade (or in this case, GPA score). That means multiplying the credits by the score that goes with them:

24 * 2.8 = 67.2

16 *  X   = 16X

40 * 3    = 120

The 40 merely represents the total points you will have after the finishing the 16 credits. Now we set up that equation:

67.2 + 16X = 120

-67.2             -67.2

---------------------

             16X  = 52.8

            /16       /16

                 X = 3.3
