About Tim

I have been tutoring math in Fairfax County for more than six years. As a math tutor, I participate in a program that helps adult students complete their GED, adult high school, and career-specific certifications. I am looking to help motivated adults (of any age) who are trying to achieve the same or similar goals but are struggling with the math part.

I work as a software engineer in the computer field and have a strong background in math. I have a bachelor's degree in computer science and minors in math and physics. I am very good at breaking things down and explaining math concepts or problems you are having trouble with, by using real-world examples to which you can relate. I am very patient too, so I will stick with you on any concept or problem, however long you need until the light bulb goes on. I have always enjoyed math from a very young age and have always excelled in it. I enjoy working on math and math-related problems or puzzles whenever they arise.

I have received excellent reviews and recommendations from my students and coordinators in the program in which I work, as well from my Wyzant students. I want to help (and enjoy helping) students achieve their goals and aspirations. My goal is to offer a realistically affordable, quality tutoring option to those who are looking to achieve those goals and aspirations, but are unable to afford typical tutoring prices.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you reach your goals!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ASVAB

For over six years I have extensively tutored all of the topics covered by the math section of the ASVAB exam, helping students pass the exam and achieve their goal of joining the U.S. military. I have helped students learn the ASVAB basics like arithmetic and fractions all the way up through geometry and statistics. I am very familiar with the ASVAB math exam content and testing strategies that can be used. Additionally, I have taken many different ASVAB math practice exams and always achieved extremely high scores. Please note that I only tutor ASVAB math (Arithmetic Reasoning and Mathematics Knowledge) at this time.

C

I studied C programming in college as part of my computer science degree. I have been programming in C for over 20 years as a software engineer. In my career, I have developed many software products and modules in C. Due to my expertise, I have given assistance to my colleagues whenever they encountered problems writing C programs or had problems understanding C concepts.

Computer Programming

I majored in computer science in college and have been working as a software engineer/programmer for over 20 years. I am proficient in Java and C, and have classroom and professional experience with C++ as well. In addition, I also have a lot of professional experience with HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, as well as web frameworks, including Spring and Struts. I have used these languages on a daily basis to develop software systems for the government and non-government customers.

For over six years I have extensively tutored all of the topics covered by the math section of the Praxis exam, including Praxis Core Math (5732) and Praxis Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects, Mathematics Subtest (5001/5003). Over the past year in 2016 and 2017, I took the Praxis Core Math test three times and the Multiple Subjects Test: Mathematics Subtest two times and achieved perfect scores all five times. I am very familiar with the exam content, have excellent practice resources, and offer effective testing strategies.

Below are the score changes of my seven most recent students. The student's previous high score is shown on the left:

Not Taken Before --> 154 (Praxis Core Math - 5732),

Patient & extremely knowledgeable

I previously took the praxis core math 3x after studying with my old hs tutor and never got higher than 134. I met with Tim about 2x/week for two months and just took the praxis again yesterday, and improved over 40+ points (passed and then some, officially certifying me to teach). His dedication to his students is amazing and the homework/resources he provides are unmatched. I can only say good t
