At the end of Inferno, Dante and Virgil emerge from the Inferno back to Earth's surface. Purgatorio, which is housed in a mountain, will have to be climbed by Dante if he wants to reach paradise (Paradisio). He leaves the darkness of the Inferno, where souls are damned, to the light of day. Purgatorio isn't paradise, but it allows those sent there the opportunity to keep moving up and toward the ultimate light of God's presence.
