Using my beautiful diagram you can break the walkway up into 4 rectangles. The top and bottom rectangles have a length of 40 + 4 + 4 = 48 and a width of 4. The side rectangles also have a width of 4 and length of 18.

 

So, (48)(4)(2) + (18)(4)(2) gives the total area
