Assuming you mean a chemical compound, then you know it is ionic if it a combination of a metal and a non metal. When a metal, such as Na, K, Li, Mg, Ca, Fe, Mg, Mn, etc, etc. bind to a non metal, such as S, O, P, Cl, F, Br, etc., etc, the bond is considered to be an ionic bond, and the compound formed is considered to be ionic, as opposed to molecular.
Is that what you wanted to know?
