Even numbers are spaced two apart, so if I let
x be the first number, then
x + 2 would be the next number, and
(x + 2) + 2 = x + 4 would be the number after that.
Since we are looking for the sum to be 108, we have
x + (x + 2) + (x + 4) = 108,
--> 3x + 6 = 108, by combining like terms,
--> 3x = 102, by subtracting 6 from both sides,
--> x = 34, by dividing both sides by 3.
Since we are looking for the middle number, we want
x + 2 = 36.
So the answer is 36.
